Lead singer Sasha came up with the title first, lying in bed at night, reflecting on an episode of Black Mirror titled San Junipero, focused on a time warping relationship between two lovers. The character who was idolised in this episode was strong and confident, reminding Sasha of Joan of Arc. Combining the playfulness of some of the scenes where the lovers met in an 1980’s arcade with that of a powerful protagonist, Joan of the Arcade was born. The band brings the central bluesy bass line, shredding guitar solos and a swag of grooves. In the studio Sasha worked with the producer Nick Sverdloff and developed fantastic backing vocals to heighten the tension and proclamations of love.
lyrics
She's my San Junipero dream
She drives a triumph death machine
I remember being seventeen when she
Spread her legs for a magazine
Joan of the arcade
(Joan of the arcade)
And I wonder
How she tastes
(Joanie, Joanie, Joanie, Joanie babe)
She never paid a single dime
(She never paid a single dime, dime, dime)
She had them all waiting in line
(She had them waiting in a line, line, line)
The heel of her boot is covered in diamonds
(Oh, oh, aah)
But babe I don't know the colour of your eyes
(oooooo ah)
Joan of the arcade
(Joan of the arcade)
And I wonder
how she tastes
(Joanie, Joanie, Joanie, Joanie babe)
Joan of the arcade
I never want to see her again
(Joanie, Joanie, Joanie, Joanie don’t you leave me babe)
If we ever went to being strangers
(aaahhh aahhhh ahhhhh aaahhh aahhhh ahhhh)
It's ‘cause you left hell with all the angels
Or will I see you later?
I wish I could say that I hate her
Joan of the arcade
(Joanie, Joanie babe)
I wonder how she tastes
(I wonder how)
(Joanie you’re a bittersweet babe)
Joan of the arcade
(Joan of the arcade)
I never want to see her again
